Library Cards

Children's Library Cards
Children may sign up for a library card in the Children’s Library if they can write their first and last name. They must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Photo ID and proof of residency must be provided by the parent or guardian. The following qualify as acceptable proof:

  •  Valid Driver’s License or State ID with current address (No PO Box as primary address)
  •  Photo ID which shows your affiliation with (school, work, social security…, etc.)
  •  Automobile registration
  •  Current receipt (no older than 3 months) with address: rent, tax or utility bill only
  •  Lease with current address

The library card is good for 3 years and is renewable.

Children up to sixth grade are issued cards from the Children’s Department.

7th-12th grade students, who come to register without their parents or guardians, must show school ID and either a recent MTV School District report card or class schedule. The current address must be printed on class schedule or report card to qualify as proof of residency.

Students at private schools in Mount Vernon need to provide information concerning school registration and current address.

Only one card per patron is needed within the Westchester Library System.

Mount Vernon Public Library cards are welcomed at all 38 Westchester Libraries and can be used for digital materials.

Borrowing Policy
Your library card must be presented each time you check out materials.

In order to charge out library materials, library fines must be kept under $10.00. You may only borrow materials with the library card in your name. You can pick up reserved materials for another person by providing their library card. Additional materials may not be added to the card.

You are responsible for all items checked out on your card. If your card is lost or stolen, please report this to the Circulation Desk or call 668-1840 ext. 216 as soon as possible. Lost cards can be replaced for a $2.00 fee.

Lost Materials
Items are considered lost when more than 6 weeks overdue. Patrons will be charged for the replacement cost after that time.

Patrons accruing more than $50.00 on their library record will be accessed a $10.00 collection agency fee.

You may purchase a replacement copy for an item lost on your account. The item must meet the specifications of the item lost (copyright date, hardcover or paperback, edition, etc.).

Renewals
Materials may be renewed once provided they are not on hold. Renewals may be made in person, via the WLS Internet home page, by phone, or by mail.
