September 14
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Type

Capoeira ([kapuˈejɾɐ]) a Brazilian martial art and dance form that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music to promote physical fitness and grace of movement.

Children who practice capoeira on a regular basis benefit from improved physical fitness and develop a positive outlook on life. Besides being fun, capoeira helps develop balance, coordination, flexibility, and a sense of rhythm and awareness of your own body. It builds self-esteem through self-expression in a playful way. The musical aspect helps kids feel more comfortable and more willing to exercise.
Children will learn:

  • teamwork
  • and community awareness.
  • basics of capoeira movements.
  • basics of capoeira games (fast/slow).
  • basics of capoeira music (percussion/singing).
  • Maculele (stick dance), and its drumming beat.

Ary Lima, aka mestre Aryranha, has been teaching kids and adults capoeira for 27 years in community centers, martial arts schools, as well after-school programs.
