Growing and Aging: Reading and Discussion Program

How does our perception of ourselves transform as we grow older? In what ways does aging change how we view
others? How has the concept of “age” changed over time? The texts in this series explore these and other questions
about entering middle age, growing older, caring for aged loved ones, and finding satisfaction in later stages of life. This
series has been developed in part to help communities talk about our aging population.
Four books will be discussed: Tinkers by Paul Harding, A History of Old Age edited by Pat Thane, Literature and Aging,
An Anthology, and In Our Prime, The Invention of Middle Age by Patricia Cohen
Discussion will be led by John Howard, Ph.,J.D. Dr. Howard retired as a
Distinguished Service Professor from Purchase College, The State University of
New York. He is retired also from the practice of law. FACES IN THE MIRROR:
OSCAR MICHEAUX AND SPIKE LEE, his well-received book on African-Americans
in film was published several years ago. He has also received grants from The National
Endowment for the Humanities and from the New York Council on the Arts, and
produced and directed a short documentary, IN SEARCH OF JUSTICE, selected for
exhibition at a Milan, Italy film festival.
