DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under supervision of a higher-level employee, performs clerical work. The work involves routine financial record keeping, reviewing, or related tasks which required the standardized application of account-keeping practices. Similar items are constantly recurring and their allocation or distribution has either been previously determined or is checked by supervisors before being made. The Mount Vernon Public Library maintenance team is applicants to work on an on call schedule within the maintenance department.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  Performs routine cleaning tasks. This is routine manual work calling for the performance of cleaning duties. Work is usually performed under the immediate supervision of The Custodial Foreman who assigns the tasks and frequently inspects them when completed. Does related work as required or directed by the Library Director.

EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrated Only)

LIBRARY AIDE

The Mount Vernon Public Library is looking for a quick and orderly person to fill a challenging and important position in the Reference Department.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO: Working at the Periodicals Desk, receive and check in periodicals, shelving and discarding periodicals, sort and distribute periodicals to various departments, update and upkeep records, and other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: High School graduate, good organizational skills, attention to details, knowledge of typing and computer skills, understanding of alpha-numeric filing, good memory and willingness to learn new skills. Experience of library work is preferable, but not essential.

It is a part time position, working 17½ hours a week, which may include some evening hours, Monday through Saturday with a day off during the week.

The pay rate is $9.00 to start, with no benefits.

Assistant Library Director

Summary: The Assistant Director supports the Library’s mission, goals and strategic plan; assumes responsibility for how the Library is perceived by staff and the public; and contributes through collaborative problem-solving. Will supervise public services activities and departments. Will also prepare and implement a development plan and will work on seeking out grant opportunities for the library.  Assists the Director with administrative day-to-day library operations including the supervision of the maintenance staff and facilities management.

Essential job responsibilities:

Where applicable, works to develop and implement the library’s strategic plan. Submits recommendations on public services policies and procedures to the Director and implements these decisions. Is familiar with all phases of operation of the library. Assists in developing and administering policies concerning library operations and programs. Advises, supervises, and evaluates Head Librarians. Makes recommendations related to appointments, promotions, transfers, and other personnel matters to the Director. Assists in the overall planning for the library by attending conferences and workshops and reading professional literature and by taking an active part in professional activities within the state as well as nationally.

The Assistant Director is an active member of the Director’s administrative team.  Assists the Director with administrative day-to-day library operations. Serves as Acting Director in absence of the Director.

Other functions: Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director.

Education & Experience: Minimum: Master’s degree in Library Science from a school accredited by the American Library Association. Should possess a thorough knowledge of professional library principles, practices, methods and knowledge of all phases of public library work; and have strong interpersonal skills, including communication (verbal and written), problem solving, and planning. 2 years public library experience with 1 year as a manager. Some library administrative experience preferred but not required. This is a civil service position. Children’s Librarian

The Mount Vernon Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic Children’s Librarian to provide services to children and their parents or caregivers under the supervision and policy direction of the Head of Children’s Services. Responsibilities will include providing reference and reader’s advisory services for children, parents, students and adults who work with children. Will assist with the design and implementation of programming for children including pre-school, toddler and baby time programs. Requires tack and skill in working with children and adults. The Mount Vernon Library serves a diverse population in an urban setting.

Requires a familiarity of children’s literature, strong communication skills, knowledge of technology and software applications including social media. Master of Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited program. Possession of a New York State Public Librarian Certificate.

The Library is looking for an enthusiastic, thoughtful leader who can design and direct collections, services, and programs for the children of the City of Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon, NY is located in Westchester County and is a member of the Westchester Library System. The library serves a diverse community in an urban setting. 35 hour work week including some evenings and weekends. The Head of Children’s Services will be responsible for: the hiring, supervising, scheduling, training and evaluation of the children’s services staff, and reports to the Library Director. Working under the Director of the Library, the candidate will be responsible for planning and
carrying out multi-faceted information and programming activities which include public
relations, social media curation, grant writing and administration, and event planning. Also
required is the coordination and management of ongoing partnerships between units of
government, non-profit organizations, business and faith-based organizations in conformity with
the library policies as established by the Board of Trustees. The ability to help implement
strategies that are aligned with opportunity gaps faced by youth in the community is a must.
The City of Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon, NY is located in Westchester County and is a

The ideal candidate will demonstrate emotional maturity, good judgment, tact, courtesy and integrity; as well as, have good interpersonal and communication skills, be flexible, approachable, self-motivated, and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

The Trustees for the Mount Vernon Public Library are seeking applicants to fill the position of Library Treasurer.
The Mount Vernon Public Library Board of Trustees currently seeks a dynamic and visionary leader as the Treasurer. Under the general supervision of the Library Board of Trustees, the Treasurer serves as the Chief Financial Officer responsible for the day-to-day administration and management of the library. The Library Director will be the active public face of the Library.
The incumbent must be a visionary with strategic and tactical approaches to:

  • Oversees payroll, accounts payable, financial reporting and control;
  • Ensures the presentation of timely and meaningful financial reports to the Board;
  • Prepares and manages line item budget for the library;
  • Responsible for the accurate and efficient management of all financial operations of the library ensuring that effective procedures have been established and in line with the best practice and legal requirements;
  • Processes all inter-account bank transfers and sets up appropriate systems of payment;
  • Presents the recommendations of the auditor to the Board for their approval. When the Finance Committee reviews the results of the audit including the management letter, develops a plan or recommendation, if necessary, and presents the results to the Board; Leads the Board in assuring compliance with Federal, State, and other reporting requirements,
  • Monitors grant reporting and appropriate release of temporarily restricted funds;
  • Assists Library Director with the development of annual and program budgets;
  • Reviews incoming and outgoing invoices;
  • Oversees expense allocations;
  • Oversees and reviews the work of the Chief Accountant Clerk and/or Principal Clerk;
  • Monitors and makes recommendations for asset retirement and replace;

The incumbent in this class is chief financial administrator of the Library. The work involves carrying out broad policy as determined by the Library Board of Trustees. The Treasurer reports to the Board of Trustees.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES:
