Mezzanine (Closed Stacks)

The Mount Vernon Public Library was chartered in March 1896 and the collection in the mezzanine goes back to the nineteenth century. The library maintains two floors of closed stacks which contain older material. These stacks include older children’s material, nonfiction and fiction adult books, reference material, government documents, VHS tapes including an African film collection, and older periodicals and newspapers. There is also a special collection, the Westchester Historical Collection, and some rare books. These books are of special interests to researchers.
Until recently, the mezzanine was the last copy repository for libraries in Westchester County, making it a collection with many rare and unusual books. This collection is especially strong in biography, history, the social sciences, literary criticism, and fiction.
If people cannot find the material they are looking for on the main floor of the library, they should contact the reference desk to see if the material is in the mezzanine. About half of the collection is in the mezzanine.
