Getting a Library Card

Circulation Services assists library patrons by issuing library cards, assisting with item check-out & check-ins, and collecting library fines and other charges. Circulation Services also assists patrons with general questions about the library.

Library Cards

A Mount Vernon Public Library card is available to all who live, work, own real property or attend school in Mount Vernon. The library card is good for 3 years and is renewable. To obtain a library card you must present photo ID AND proof of residency at the Circulation Desk. The following qualify as acceptable proof:

  •  Valid Driver’s License or State ID with current address (No P.O. Box as primary address)
  •  Photo ID which shows your affiliation with (school, work, social security. . . etc.)
  •  Automobile registration
  •  Current receipt (no older than 3 months) with address: rent, tax or utility bill only
  •  Lease with current address

Patrons who reside outside of Westchester County but work in Mount Vernon must present proof of employment, photo ID and proof of residency in order to obtain a library card. This card is good for 1-year and is renewable by providing previously stated information again.

Children may sign up for a library card in the Children’s Library if they can write their first and last name. They must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Photo ID and proof of residency must be provided by the parent or guardian.

7th-12th grade students, who come to register without their parents or guardians, must show school ID and either a recent Mount Vernon School District report card or class schedule. The current address must be printed on class schedule or report card to qualify as proof of residency.

Students at private schools in Mount Vernon need to provide information concerning school registration and current address.

Only one card per patron.

Mount Vernon Public Library cards are welcomed at all 38 Westchester Library System (WLS) libraries and can be used for digital materials.
