A Special Black History Month Keynote Address
Dr. Barnett is a passionate jazz lover and scholar. She has conducted over 100 interviews with women musicians and edited the volumes, I Got Thunder: Black Women Songwriters on Their Craft (2007), and Off the Record: Conversations with African American & Brazilian Women Musicians (2015). In the past Dr. Barnett hosted a jazz radio show on WBAI, and often teaches “Women in Jazz” at Jazz at Lincoln Center. She earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from The College of William and Mary.
Dr. Barnett’s novel Jam on the Vine was elected for the Stonewall Honor Book Award by the American Library Association at its mid-winter conference earlier this month.
